Human Rights Defenders from Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia meet in Tbilisi

On Friday, 9 July, from 11:00 am human rights defenders from Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia hold a round table meeting in the hotel "Courtyard Marriot" (address: Freedom Square #4).
The topic of the round table is "Strategic litigation - tool of human rights protection and promotion in the Eastern Partnership".
On the meeting representatives of the Ministry of Justice, NGOs "Article 42 of the Constitution", "Georgian Young Lawyer's Association" and "Human Rights Center" will make special presentations about strategic litigation.
Process and features of the strategic litigation in Moldova, Armenia and Azerbaijan will be discussed by human rights defenders from Moldova, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The initiator of the meeting is the Moldovan non-governmental organization "Promo lex", and its partner in Georgia is the organization "Article 42 of the Constitution".
The round table is organized with the support of "Open Society - Georgia" and organization "Article 42 of the Constitution.

International Conference will take place in Tbilisi
Tomorrow, on 3 July 2010 11:00 am, an international conference will be opened in Tbilisi, Hotel "Courtyard Marriot" (address: Tavisuflebis Moedani (Freedom Square) #4).
The topic of the conference is "Freedom of expression, protection of the freedom to assembly and association in the South Caucasus".
The conference is organized with the initiative of the non-governmental organizations "Article 42 of the Constitution" and "Human Rights Center".
Representatives of the European Union, OSCE, Eurasian Foundation, Netherlands Helsinki Committee, Public Defender of Georgia, the Supreme Court of Georgia, media and non-governmental organizations from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia will participate in the conference and make special presentations.

Organization « Article 42 of the Constitution » will organize a round table on 29 June, 15:30 pm, in the Hotel «Ambassador » on the topic:

"Adversarial proceedings, guarantees of the defence rights and jury trial according to the Code of Criminal Proceedings of Georgia"

Manana Kobakhidze, executive director of the organization « Article 42 of the Constitution » will open the meeting.
Legal experts will make presentations on the following topics: adversarial proceedings and guarantees for defence rights, collection and implementation of evidences, jury trial.
Members of the parliament, Public Defender Giorgi Tugushi, representatives of the constitutional commission, the Supreme Court of Georgia, Tbilisi City Court and Tbilisi Appeal Court, prosecutor's office, international and non-governmental organizations will participate in the meeting.
The meeting is organized in the framework of the project « Building public demand for better legislation, which is implemented by the organization « Article 42 of the Constitution » with financial support of the American organization « National Endowment for Democracy ».
The goal of the project is to improve Georgian legislation through idenfication and eradication of gaps and unconstitutional provisions, protection of victims' rights before the Constitutional Court and raising public awareness in relation to the Constitutional litigation.

Today is the court hearing on the case of the incident in TV company "Caucasus"
Today, 28 June, 15:00 pm, a court hearing will be held in the Tbilisi City Court on the case of the incident that took place in TV company "Kavkasia" ("Caucasus").
On 7 May 2010, members of the orthodox movement, including students and a schoolboy were detained and accused of the illegal interference in the activities of the journalist and of hooliganism.
On the court hearing held on 24 May, the defence lawyers brought a motion before the court requesting to accept the bail for prisoners (the parliament members, Dimitri Lortkipanidze and Jondi Baghaturia, as well as Shalva Natelashvili and Zviad Dzidziguri submitted motions about going bail). The court did not satisfy the claim and these persons are still under arrest.
The following persons will be examined on the instant case: Davit Akubardia, Nino Jangirashvili, Aleko Elisashvili and other employees of "Caucasus".

Tomorrow, on Friday, 28 May 2010, 15:00 a special meeting will be held in hotel « Tbilisi Marriot » (address : Rustaveli avenue #13) with the participation of Avtandil Demetrashvili, head of the state constitutional commission, Gia Arsenishvili, Pavle Kublashvili, Dimitri Lortkipanidze, members of the Parliament, Giorgi Tugushi, Public Defender and representatives of the constitutional commission, Tbilisi City Court, international and non-governmental organizations.

On Monday, 3 May 2010, 11:30 am, organization "Article 42 of the Constitution" will organize a meeting and a special briefing for the journalists dedicated to the International Day of Freedom of Press.
"Georgian media in 2009"
The officials of the organization will make on overview of the reports and evaluations of the international and local organizations about the operation of media in Georgia and will discuss the concrete facts of pressure on the journalists and other violations of the journalists' rights. They will make special statements towards the journalists and the government
The briefing will be held in the office of the organization "Article 42 of the Constitution".

On Tuesday, 19 May 2009, 11:30 am, a press conference will be held in the office of the organization "Article 42 of the Constitution" about the unprecedented decision delivered by the Constitutional Court of Georgia several days ago. The details of the constitutional claim brought against Parliament of Georgia and the decision delivered by the Constitutional Court will be disclosed to the media on the press conference.

On Saturday, 7 June a roundtable on the topic "Health of the prisoners and their legal defense" will be held at the Hotel "Tbilisi Marriott" (address: Rustaveli av. #13) from 10:30 am to 16:00 pm. A roundtable is organized by organization "Article 42 of the Constitution" in the frames of the project "Legal defense for vulnerable and marginal groups at the places of detention". A roundtable will host the representatives from governmental, non-governmental and international organizations.

On 5-6 May, a workshop will be held for the lawyers working on the ECHR cases in Telavi.
The workshop will be opened on Monday, 5 May, 10:00 am, in the Hotel "Rcheuli Marani" (address: Telavi, Chavchavadze str. #154)
Experts of the Council of Europe, organization "Article 42 of the Constitution" and the lawyer of the registry of the ECHR will conduct the meeting.
It will for the first time that Telavi hosts the workshop of the network of lawyers with participation of the experts of the European Court of Human Rights and Council of Europe.
The topic of the workshop will be substantive and procedural issues of the proceedings before the ECHR. The participants will also participate in the moot court exercise.

On Wednesday, 30 April 17 :00 pm, a presentation of the project will be held at the Public Defender's Office.
The project : « Legal defense of vulnerable and marginal groups at the places of detention". The project is implemented by organization « Article 42 of the Constitution » with financial support of the OSCE Mission to Georgia.
The necessity of carrying out the project was derived from the grave conditions of the deseased prisoners and high deathrate.
At the presentation representative of the OSCE Mission to Georgia, Public Defender and the representatives of the « Article 42 of the Constitution » will discuss the importance of the project and will inform the society about the activites that are planned in the framework of the project.

On 22 March, 10:00 am, a workshop of lawyers working on ECHR cases will be opened in Batumi, Hotel « Tanamgzavri ».
The organizator of the meeting in "Article 42 of the Constitution". The participants will be the advocates practising in the Adjara region.

On 15th of December, lawyers of the organization "Article 42 of the Constitution" will organize a workshop in Telavi for advocates from Kakheti region. The main principles and charachteristics of litigation in the European Court and Constitutional litigation will be discussed on the workshop.

On Monday, 10 December 11:30 am, in respect of the International Human Rights Day, organization "Article 42 of th Constitution" will hold a conference in its office.
On the conference the advocates will discuss events and generally the situation of the year in regard to Human Rights protection in Georgia.
Information about presenting a claim to the Constitutional Court will also be announced on the conference.
Organization "Article 42 of the Constitution" appeals ammendments to the Criminal Procedure Code adopted by Parliament, which substantively restrict a possibility to appeal decision of the first instance Court on pre-trial detention.
The above mentioned ammendments contravene article 42 of the Constitution and the European Convention of Human Rights.

On Thursday, 15th of November at 11 a.m. Tbilisi City Court, Chamber of Administrative Cases will hear a case of Anjelica Kiknadze against Tbilisi Mayor's Office and Ministry of Finances. Plaintiff requests the defendants to pay a debt of Cooperative Housing in amount of 75 380 GEL. Advocates of "Article 42 of the Constitution" defend the interests of the plaintiff. Judge Nino Sharadze considers the case.

On Wednesday, 19th September, at 12 o'clock, Administrative cases Collegium of Tbilisi Municipal Court will examine claim of a citizen of Iran's Islamic Republic against the Ministry of Refugee and Accommodation. The complainant's lawyers from "Article 42 of the Constitution" appeal denial to grant the status of refugee to the foreign citizen. Judge, Ms. Nino Oniani considers the case.

On Friday, 7th September, at 11:00, the Administrative Cases' Collegium of the Municipal Court of Tbilisi will held preliminary hearing on case of Grigol Karapetiani. The complainant sues revoking of the administrative act of Tbilisi District Administration prohibiting him from privatization of a dwelling. Mr. Karapetiani is represented before the judicial body by Nino Elbakidze and Ana Tvaradze, lawyers from "Article 42 of the Constitution".

Russudan Mchedlishvili and Kakhaber Kakhaberi lawyers of Article 42 of the Constitution on behalf of Green Alternative challenged for confidentiality of the public information on environment issues.

On 13 June 2007, at 15.00, Administrative Panel of Tbilisi Municipal Court considers appeal complaint of Vartazar Egizariani and Ashot Surmaliani burnt on anti-tank mine near Chakvi shore in 2004. The respondent state bodies in the present case are: Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs, State United Social Insurance Fund of Georgia and Isani-Samgori District Administration of Tbilisi. Ketevan Mekhuzla and Vanda Jijelava, lawyers of Article 42 of the Constitution claim for material and moral damages representing interests of both complainants.

The event will be conducted within the framework of the project "Strategic Litigation in Caucasus" and the main subject of the meeting is prohibition of torture, inhuman and degrading treatment.
